Enjoying November

I’m starting to enjoy the seasons to come. I have a lot of my cancer treatments, behind me. Now I have free days. Starting with re-potting the Orchid. Which was an experience. They really do need cramped roots, and tiny pots. It’s like squeezing a fat lady into a small corset. But I DID IT!!

The best time I had yesterday. Was to bring pots, into my little Greenhouse. And fill the benches with some nice things to come. These are my herbs, of Parsley, Basil, plenty of Thyme and Marjoram. These are fresh and healthy. No spraying, and rich dirt.

This is showing my Money Plant. I love that old thing. It’s about 15 years and gives the nicest shade of green. It’s n that white/pink pot. It’s an original. As it grows it’s stems they twist around each other. This makes an interesting TRUNK. Now they use a hybrid and plant two and twist them manually.

There are a couple of Christmas/Easter Cactus.

I have some pretty flowers too……….

This one is going to make me even MORE GREY!! Ha, I let her munch for a bit then knock on the window. If she eats it all today…nothing is left for tomorrow!

Birds still finding food

Like they said it would.  It stopped around 11AM,  There is wind but not much. We should be getting high winds and low temps soon.  My area got around a foot. I’m still unable to open any doors. Still I got some photos.

Winter Traffic!

A little snow fell, these past weeks. My friends in the forrest decided to pay me a visit.

IMG_0941

This was following the first big blast of Old Man Winter. The deer feasted on the pines.  Then wandered to

my window.

We were hit again, with more snow. It was quite miserable. The visibility was very low, and the winds were howling.

IMG_0977

It’s estimated that 50 inches have fallen.

You can see her just to the left of the out building.

My Winter Company

Image

I think, I miss my husband the most, in the winter.  It’s not the holidays. It’s the times when we had a heavy snow fall, fierce winds and temporary loss of power.  Not that he did anything about it. I was the one loading the wood stove, getting out the sterno, grabbing blankets.
It was when the creatures came out of the woods, deer came to the windows, the fox would run along the shoveled walk ways. Eddie would say, “Mary get the camera” and I would.  This winter is the same. I still get the camera, and feel he’s still with me.
These past couple, of weeks, have been full of storms. Resulting in visitors. Some come more often than others. It’s endearing to know that some things don’t change.  The Whitetail Deer, the Eastern Coyote are ever present these months.
He/she stood off by the wood’s edge before he came close to the house.

And had no problem being on camera.

And of course the deer.

This is a Buck, you can see his  antlers.

Sometimes the light is just right, the stance is perfect..you have to take the picture.

This was taken a couple of weeks ago. My Ollie never saw deer before (I don’t think) He was fascinated.
Image
When it comes to food though.  Ollie has it all over the coyote and deer. He protects his food source better than then them all.

I don’t know if my Eddie would approve of the cat having so much charge of the kitchen.  But I do know he would welcome all our wild visitors.
I hope you have some beautiful company too!

A little white stuff

This is my orchid, looks nice with the snow back ground.

View from the front door at 3 AM,  on Blizzard Day

And this is the same view at 8 AM,

And it’s still snowing, I guess for the rest of the DAY,

There are 68,000 power outages in towns all around ME.   So far so good.

A Walk in the Woods.

I love this time of year.  Now that we are in autumn we get to enjoy nature’s overwhelming bounty and tremendous beauty. I love to walk in the woods, take in the smells enjoy the crisp breeze, listen to the animals scurry as they hear my footsteps.  Long ago I read a poem, I was never able to find it again. I wished I clipped it from the newspaper and saved it.  There was a line in  that sweet poem……I feel greener now, cleaner now, for my walk in the woods.
Every year, at this time.  I research for that sentence on Bartleby . In doing so I came across this beautiful poem by Jimmie K. Bunnell.  The way he speaks of the  distant train whistle and the deer, is like he was walking with me.

A Walk In The Woods
by Jimmie K. Bunnell
I took a walk in the woods today,
I often start my morning this way.
The trail was beaten, winding and wide,
With deep ruts and tall oak trees on each side.
\A long black snake is lying in the path ahead,
Asleep or perhaps maybe even dead.
No! not true, he awakes and slithers swiftly past,
He comes straight in my direction, then gone so fast.
\A train whistle loud in the distance can be heard,
I catch a glimpse of a small chirping brown bird.
A tall deer stops dead in his tracks,
Then suddenly bounds away not daring to look back.
\A flock of vultures soar & circle in the distance sky,
I stop a moment to ponder what the reason is, why?
Yes, nature is alive and well today in the woods,
The sights & sounds of the woods, so misunderstood.
I hope everyone has a chance this Fall to take a
beautiful walk in the woods.

Winter Time

Hi everyone.  We’ve had a frigid winter and snowy forecasts.
However it’s been a relatively easy one as winters do go. No
major storms.  Only the inconvenient 4-6 inch snows. If I was
a youngster looking for a snow day, I’d be disappointed!

I’m still a  mitten person.  I’ve been making them
since I was very young. Often without good results.
I made a pair of red mittens, for my husband. They were
HUGE.   I knew I was using up a lot of yarn but I kept going.
Well they were far too big for anyone to wear and they
ended up stuffed in a drawer. Then one day they
somehow ended up in the wash.  Being all wool, they
not only shrunk they felted a bit. And now have to be the
warmest and softest mittens ever. I’m wearing them for
everything.
If you see someone wearing fire engine red mittens IT’S ME!
