Enjoying the stash!

I’m still loving my delivery, from Lion-Brand. I was able to make a set. Using “Mount Rainier”. It’s a “Heartland” yarn. And it’s a delight to knit. It is soft but has a good drape, and handles well, on the needles. It never split, there are no knots, or lumps. Not with the skeins I used. Although I rarely run into that problem with this make.

I made a cowl, mittens and I also did a scarf using the Addi Circular Knitting Loam. I don’t think I caught a picture of it. As I wanted to get it to my dear friend. She lived in Washington State looking at Mount Rainier..which is exactly what this gorgeous yarn is called.

Mount Rainier Heatland Yarn by Lion-Brand. This is it while I work the loom.

And these are the cowl and mittens. Btw. They feel so nice to wear.

These are the 4-needle mittens. I cast on 34 stitches on size 3 needle. I use small needles on all mittens even though they recommend size 7. I need the mittens to be tight, which makes them comfortable. It also keeps the shape, which helps with warmth.

The border it does in REDWOOD, by Heartland. Oh me and my Heartland. And here I am 20 mins from the bridge to Cape Cod and the open sea.

Lassen Volcanic is the name of this line. It’s a pretty shade, and a bit of a sheen like the Tacoma line.

COWL

With size 8 circular needles

Cast on 84 stitches…knit 3 rows even

4th row, purl 4 knit 3. …do Four Rows

You should be 8 rows now.  The 9th row,

purl the 4 stitches and make a cable of the next

three stitches.   It’s simple. …purl 4 and then put

the needle in the back of the third KNIT stitches knit that stitch

(it can be awkward  the first few times)  then knit the next

two. You just made a cable.  Continue in pattern making

a cable every 4th round.

You can make it as long as you wish.  This one is 10 inches.

MITTENS

I use the standard 4-needle mitten pattern. It’s in my head now.

I used size 3 needles.  Because I wanted it to be snug.  I cast on.

34 stitches and knit 2-purl-2.  for 4 inches. I make them long in

the wrist and below the thumb. This isn’t a fast project. It takes

me a week to make a mitten.  Keep little notes when you have

to put it aside.

This is the actual VERY OLD pattern for 4-needle mittens.

https://freevintageknitting.com/mittens/615-mittens-pattern.html

It was a dark day. I had to put everything on a chair and use the light, from the window. I wanted to get the color closest to the shade it is. It’s a cabled cowl and the standard 4-needle mittens.

And this is my HOMEMADE BREAD. I added a 1/4cup of Libby’s Pumpkin, and decreased the warm water. It’s GOOD. Makes a nice Tuna Salad! I slice it in half and freeze it. It is rich and has no preservatives. It will get moldy if I don’t. Fortunately when it thaws it will still taste homemade.

A Little Hat.

I’ve been a little under the weather. So I finished up another
item in my knitting basket.
(side)
This is a no direction beret/cap.  Or to use easier terms
“Wing IT”.
I cast on 68 stitches, size 8 needles. did a knit/purl rib for
2-3 inches.  Then joined the ends and worked in the round on size 6
needles.  (actually I needed the size 8’s for another project) I think
it looks nicer with the smaller stitches.
(bottom)

When it got to the right size
I decreased evenly around, making the little spoke pattern. Then stitch
up the seam left from the straight needles.
(top)
Actually knitting time was an afternoon……..True project time was a year!!!

I want my needles BACK!

I have so many WIPs …Works in Progress.  I’m running out of needles.  And they’re

the good knitting needles too.  So I decided that I would finish off all these

projects and get my needles back.  This hat has been flopping around for a while.

Because we actually did lose power yesterday.  And you don’t need electricity to

knit.  I finished this item.

This is a Red Heart yarn, I don’t have the ball band anymore but I think it’s in

their “heather” line.

With size 8 round needles cast on 80 stitches and work a rib…2 knit, 2 purl

for 6 inches.  Then a plain knit for about 3 inches…It works fast.

Transfer to 4-size 8 dpns, with the same amount on each needle.  With the

fifth needle knit two together at the first of every needle, …then knit a row,

then knit two together at  the begining of each needle then knit a row, and so on.

 When you

have 10 stitches on each needle, knit one, knit tow together, knit even, then

knit each stitch together, with a crotchet hook slide the remaining stitches

through with a slip of yarn and knot off.  Make a pom pom and there ya go.

This hat is not tight, it’s flexable and you can zip through it in a night.

Although it took me months.  One skein is enough.

The color from my camera changes with the light. I have no idea what I’m doing with that

camera.  You can wear this with a roll or a rib, it’s a lot of fun.

Okay I just got some size 8 double pointed needles out of the stash, now I’m going to

finish a cowl. I’m on a ROLL!!

Mustard and Relish

This is what we have around here…..bare trees and snow.

I made a hat I call…….Mustard and Relish.
It’s thick and cushy and fabulous
for strong winds.

I made it from Lion Brands Vanna White Baby Yarn.
 Which really isn’t
baby yarn, but it has fun colors
 and works up fast.

I placed it on the snow and took a picture

And it left an imprint!!!

Yarn Subsidy Program!!

Boston is having the mayoral elections today..Voting DAY!!

Today’s calendar by the Yarn Harlot (Stephanie Pearl McPhee)
Never Not Knitting! Page-A-Day Calendar 2009 (Original Page a Day Calendars)

Tuesday November 3, 2009

GO Vote. Then ask whomever is elected to create a yarn
subsidy program.

I LOVE Stephanie.  I got her calendar  Christmas. I
didn’t actually get into it until around March. Now every day
is a surprise.   I’ll post more on what she has to say some other
day.  If you’re looking for something to get a knitter for Christmas,
for her kitchen, bedroom or dorm room. This could be a nice
stocking stuffer.

Whilst I was deprived of the outside world, I comforted myself
with shopping. Yarn Shopping.  Like I don’t have enough yarn
already. I found a sale on Red Heart, and bought the Vanna White
that wasn’t on sale. Vanna White by Lion Brand, it’s a sturdy yarn
and washes well. It’s not delicate by any means however I do love
her colors. It’s the colors that get me.   It’s perfect for hats and
mittens, even the lost ones. Because when they’re found you can
put them in the laundry and they come back brand new, from the
laundry fairy.
..

First I made a hat.  Excellent yarn for a hat, especially if someone is
allergic to natural fibers.
Colors are…”Lamb”,  “Cheery Cherry” ” Dusty Green”

I did the mittens this week, (last night).  This is the first I’ve seen them in
day light.

It’s a good yarn, for winter.  Works up quickly, doesn’t fray/split, you don’t even
need a gauge with the hat. Especially if you’re going for warmth.  I always do
what I call storm hats, with extra length.  Everyone knows how cold it can be
commuting, shoveling, even starting the car.
See how nice and long the brim is, I swear it only took me a couple of hours.

Basic directions,

Size 7 needle..in the round.

Cast on 72 stitches, work rib pattern for 6 inches, change to knit, work in the round 4 1/2 inches, decrease 7 and 8th, knit even, then 6 and 7th knit even …until you have 8 stitches and pull through with the strand of yarn.  You can make a pom pom too!!!

Chemo Caps

I thought I’d post a couple of pictures of the
 chemo caps.
These two can be rolled down over the ears or rolled up,
depending on how you want to wear it.

It’s an easy fast knit. The cables take out the
 boredom, of the straight knit.
It has a wonderful flexible texture to
it.

Actually it’s been easy to do these hats the past week.

We’ve been sloshing around in rain, unable to play
outside.
Rather than do anything practical like, clean house,
pay bills, file paperwork, or organize
  closets..I’ve been knitting
and reading. ..NAUGHTY ME!

Basic, rolled brim, chemo cap

The ball band recommends a 10 1/2 (US) size needle.
I used a 9..it worked out well.
Cast on 64 stitches and worked in the round for 3 inches
with main color

then added second color for three (3) rows.
Put a pale pink double strand of baby yarn, one row,
then the second color  again for four (4) rows.
Worked main color 10 rows (about
two inches)
Repeated with the second color two rows the baby
yarn one row, second color 4 rows.
Decreased in main color..
8 and 9 stitch together..one row
7 and 8 stitch together..next row
6 and 7 stitch together and so on till there are 6 stitches
and pulled the yarn through.

It’s long enough to pull over the ears, and easy enough to roll up.

Leslie’s Stash

My daughter in law, Leslie, is facing a round,
 of chemo, treatments.
Yesterday they met with the
doctors to make a schedule
and detail the
course of action.

She’s young and full of life. Her attitude is amazing. She
has three young children. Too young to watch their Mommy
go through this.

I was able to hit a very nice Yarn Shop, and pick up some
beautiful soft yarn to make some cheery colored chemo
caps.   She doesn’t want pink. However I found some lovely
peach, and blue.

Of course I have plenty of soft yarn from other chemo caps.
 I thought it would be
nice to have a special stash just for her.

This is called Kashmir, from Trendsetter Yarns.
65% cashmere, 35% silk.
Purchased at
 Snow Goose Yarns.

I use the patterns on

Please keep Leslie in  your prayers.
As she is always the one
who is the first to pray for others.

Grandmother’s Favourite.

Back in March I started a little sweater coat for a new Little Miss, 0-11 months.

I took the pattern from Patons Beehive Wee Wonders.
Book # 478, Mignonnettes, Beehive Astra.

If you look up you’ll see that
I posted the pattern on a separate page. (or on the side bar)
You’ll want to copy/paste it to your word
processor and stretch it to large so the yarn
and sizes line up.
Anyway I love this old book it. It was printed in 1986, and this
is the third time I’ve made this outfit.
Every time I love it more because yarn has come so far,
it’s more brilliant, and more finished
than in the 50’s when I started knitting.

A beginner who knows knitting terms would be able to make this.
It’s basically rib and seed stitch. Pick a color you enjoy and cast on.
It’s awfully pretty.

Little things

.
.
I’m finally using up some of the lovely yarn
I purchased during the fall.  I did make some
children hats from the Misti Alpaca Baby,
yarn named Could Blue.

With the leftovers I worked on a pair of mittens.
This yarn is very soft and flexible.  I found that working with size
3 (three) dpns was the best bet. Instead of casting on the
normal 44, I worked with 40 for the rib.
It’s pretty good, they’re snug not tight, and ohhh so soft.

In between the mittens I worked on Jan’s
Scarf.  This is it a week ago. I killed the
batteries in my camera so this is it till
I get to the store.

With the Rowan Cocoon I was able to squeeze out another
chemo cap. I was able to send this, with the cowl,
off to my friend.

The colors look way off, but they do match, it must have been
the flash.
